Observation 4. 19
December 22, 2004
First off, let me wish everybody a happy holiday season - I can't
believe it is already here! I always try to do a year-end review of sorts,
commenting on anything from my favorite cd purchases of the year to
predictions for the upcoming year. I hope you enjoy:
Best CD Purchase
As many of you know, I enjoy buying cds. Some people claim that it
might even be an obsession. I'm not sure that I would go that far, but I
probably buy more cds than I should. By the way, mind your own
business. I don't point your many faults! The best cd purchase of the year by
far was The Killers, and their Hot Fuss cd. You may have heard some of
the songs on Y-100, including the techno-rock mishmash of Mr.
Brightside, or the addicting transexual-themed Somebody Told Me. You may have
also seen this group displayed on the O.C. (a t.v. show that I might or
might not be addicted to, depending on what you think of the show). This
cd finds itself into my car cd player more than any other cd currently.
Other cds that warrent mention include the self titled Franz Ferdinand
cd, the new cd from Interpol, and the Modest Mouse cd. Yes, I also
bought the Live Licks Stones 2-cd set (did you expect anything else?), but
(a) the Stones already have too many live albums, and (b) it is really
not one of their better efforts.
Best Movie
Let me first start off by saying my favorite movies are usually
comedies, and that I didn't get to see Lord of the Rings (the latest one), nor
did I get to see Spiderman 2 (but I really wasn't as thrilled with the
first one as everyone else was). That being said, my favorite movie of
the year was Anchorman, starring Will Ferrell. I understand that Mr.
Ferrell is like Liverwurst, you either love him or you hate him. I
think he is a riot, and this movie was no different. But, I think that one
of Will's sidekicks stole the movie - the guy that used to be on the
Daily Show. He was an absolute riot, and I still use some of his lines
from that movie.
BEST DVD Purchase - Oh, so many dvd's were bought this year. But, I
would have to say that Will Ferrell's SNL DVD 2 volume set was an
absolute scream. It really showcases his talents at being both a straight man
(like a Dean Martin) or the comedic element (like Jerry Lewis). Some
of my favorites, such as Jeopardy, and the cheerleaders are on this, in
addition to a bunch of off-the-wall scenes, and some really neat
extras.
Worst Movie
Without a doubt, Polar Express was almost unwatchable. The computer
animations were really good, but man, those adults were freaky. Also, I
kept wondering why that stupid kid wouldn't just sit in his seat until
the train got to the North Pole. What do you expect when they try to
expand a 36-page book into a full-lenght movie?
Best Sports Moment
It would have to be when the Red Sox won the World Series, although I
also liked it when they swept those stinkin' Yankees.
Worst Sports Moment
Being from Philadelphia, I have so many to choose from. I guess, for
me, the worst sports moment was when the Flyers lost to Tampa Bay in
game 7 of the Eastern Conference NHL finals. But, it could've been when
the Eagles lost to Carolina way back last January in the NFC
championship game. Or, it could've been when the Phillies fired Bowa, and hired a
puppet to be the manager of that sorry franchise. Or, it could've been
when T.O. got injured, all but flushing the Birds' title hopes down the
toilet. I declare it a tie between all of these.
Best Video Game Purchase:
I don't buy many video games anymore, but I did purchase 3 from ESPN
video games this year, and right now, my favorite is ESPN's NHL 2K5. The
gameplay is incredible, the crib is really neat, the party mode is
addictive, and the skills competition is outstanding. You can't beat this
game for $20.
Predictions
I'll throw out 10 predictions for 2005, and we'll see how I do next
December.
10. There will be no NHL hockey in 2005 (yes, that means next season).
I believe that this league is in trouble, and another league might be
able to take advantage of this, if they get the right people behind it.
9. The Eagles will make it to the Super Bowl. I'll stop there.
8. The Phillies will finish 4th in their division, and Ed Wade will
finally be fired.
7. The Stones will announce a new cd and their last world tour (wishful
thinking), and so will the Kinks (who knows, maybe the two will tour
together).
6. Barry Bonds will not break the all-time home run record this
season....in fact, I predict his body breaks down and he has to retire (oh
please, oh please, oh please!!!!).
5. This will be American Idol's last season, as it will tank (pretty
please!!!!!!!).
4. The U.S. will still be having trouble in Iraq (um, things
look.......a little.....dangerous there).
3. Drive-in Movie Theatres will make a comeback (shot in the dark. I
figure if 50's style diners can make a comeback, why can't these?).
2. The FCC will try to overstep their bounds by trying to regulate pay
t.v. and pay radio.
1. Acid washed jeans will be back (maybe along with mullets).
